  • Mavis Abednego, Educator

Mavis Small Abednego was an educator for over 28 years and is now enjoying a surprisingly busy retirement. She has taught language arts, literature, and communication studies at secondary and tertiary levels. She attended the University of the Virgin Islands where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and then went on to Lehman College, City University of New York where she earned a Master of Science in Reading Education. She is married and has one son. For several years, Mavis was a staff sponsor of the Elmore Stoutt Literary and Debating Society.  And before that, she worked with intrepid student-writers and editors on a monthly British Virgin Islands High School school newspaper, The Students’ Voice. Curating spaces within which students could embark on literary exploration was a highlight in her teaching career. Mavis is a bibliophile and a proud member of a local book club that has run, uninterrupted, for 20 years.  Whether a book club selection is loved or panned by members, the discussions that can escalate to debate, and the sharing of insights prove the power that stories have to build and maintain human connections.
